New Zealand Sign Language week is upon us (4-10 May) so it would be great if you could head over to the official website, New Zealand Sign Language Week, to have a squiz to see what they have got going on. This is something that is close to my heart and I would love to share this beautiful language with as many people as possible. My daughter is really starting to embrace NZSL and this has allowed her to become an active “communicator". This is lovely to witness as for so long she has not had an effective way to communicate.
Why not participate in the “Learn 7 signs in 7 days” challenge? This is an easy way to learn some core vocabulary within a realistic time frame. Remember to try to incorporate each new sign you learn across your day so you give yourself time to practice and use the signs in context. Make sure you make it a family affair so you have more opportunities to use the signs and help each other to remember them!
How about giving finger spelling ago and learn how to spell your name in NZSL. Spend the week greeting your friends and family by signing your name. See who can remember all the letters in their name!!! This is also an awesome way to support literacy development. By using these signs when you’re targeting certain letters in the alphabet as a visual/gestural prompt. Check out the NZSL Alphabet Poster to get you started.
Enjoy discovering a new language!
